The Università degli Studi di Padova located in Padua was founder in 1222 when a large group of students and professors left the University of Bologna in search of more academic freedom. From the fifteenth to the eighteenth century, the university was renowned for its research, particularly in the areas of medicine, astronomy, philosophy and law. The university can count Galileo Galilei (1592-1610) and Nicolaus Copernicus (1501-1502) as two of its most famous scholars. In recent years, the University has been able to meet the problems posed by overcrowded facilities by re-deploying over the Veneto as a whole. In 1990, the Institute of Management and Engineering was set up in the nearby town of Vicenza located about 40Km from Padua. The student body today numbers in excess of 65,000 students

The conference will take place at the DTG - Dipartimento di Tecnica e Gestione dei Sistemi Industriali in Vincenza. The town of Vicenza has remote origins, that go back to the prehistoric age. In the medieval area Vicenza was under the domination of the Scaligery dynasty, but from 1404 to 1797 the long Venetian domination guaranteed four centuries of peace and well-being. The art reached very high levels and the economy grew. The 16th century was the time of the great architect Andrea Palladio, who left Vicenza and the whole world a priceless artistic heritage. In the 19th century, after the fall of Napoleon, the town passed to the Austrians and later belonged to the Lombard Venetian Kingdom. In 1866 it was incorporated into the Kingdom of Italy.

September is a great time to travel to Italy and the Veneto region has much to offer the visitor. We have every confidence of providing an exciting, worthwhile and intellectually stimulating conference.

Come and join us at ECKM 2009, in Vicenza!
